What is INTRAC? INTRAC is an ‘intranasal vaccine’ that is squirted up the dog’s nose to vaccinate against Kennel Cough. Protection rapidly develops in 4 to 5 days, but is short-lived, lasting less than 6 months. Kennel Cough (infectious bronchitis) is an  is a contagious respiratory tract infection of dogs. Like human coughs and colds, it transmits best where large numbers of animals come in close proximity, e.g. in kennels, shows, and training classes! (hence the common term ‘kennel’ cough)

It is caused by a number of different bacteria and viruses, often in combination together, rather than by one specific bug. This means that every outbreak can be different, in both incubation time, severity, and range of symptoms. Sometimes dogs show wet snuffly noses and sneezing, sometimes severe pneumonia is a feature. More typical is the hacking cough, preceded by 12 hours of retching as if the dog is trying to be sick.

A dog can transmit  the disease without currently be showing clinical signs, if it is

  • recovering from an episode of illness.

  • in the early stages of infection before clinical signs develop

  • incubating the disease, but it’s immunity prevents it from succumbing to the disease itself.

Why does my dog need to be vaccinated with INTRAC? Although Kennel Cough is rarely fatal in most outbreaks, it can be fatal and is especially dangerous for weaker animals (e.g. older dogs). We take our responsibility for all our residents very seriously and want to do all we can to protect them. In the case of Kennel Cough, this entails reducing the instances, severity and spread of Kennel Cough whilst dogs are in our care.

Will you walk my dog whilst in kennels? Yes.  Unless specifically requested or we deem it inadvisable (for example, if your dog is very old and the weather is very bad), all dogs are walked twice a day on 26' retractable leads in fields at our 7 acres site.

Can you administer medication while my cat or dog is in kennels? Yes. Unless otherwise arranged, please ensure you bring all the medication and instructions needed during your pet's stay. Visits to your vet (if local) or ours can also be arranged if this will be necessary during the boarding period, although we do not advise putting very sick animals into kennels/cattery..

What is Microchipping ?

Microchipping provides a permanent, inexpensive form of identification that cannot be lost, altered, or intentionally removed. The process is quick and painless and can help ensure a happy reunion.

Microchips are no bigger than a grain of rice and are inserted in the scruff of the pet’s neck. Each microchip has a unique identification number that is never duplicated. Once implanted it can be scanned to find the details of the pet’s home and owner.

Once implanted with a microchip that is part of the scheme, your pet’s details will be added to the central database. This enables you to be traced by an authorised body such as an animal warden who can scan your pet and read the microchip number.

The microchips used at Spangleberry are registered with PETTRAC, part of the global AVID organisation.

AVID has the largest (14million) and oldest 24/7 recovery database in the world, and reunites 1400 pets with their owners every day.

PETTRAC is part of the AVID Global Recovery System, which is staffed 24/7, 365days a year. Started in 1985, PETTRAC provides Freephone numbers throughout the world, so with Pet Passports, your pet can be recovered wherever you go.

The PETTRAC freephone number is also connected to the other databases, so their number is the only one you need. (24hr Lost and Found 0800 652 9977)
